What's the tale? The library has been home to a ghost librarian since the turn of the 20th century. The ghost is the late Governer James Whitcomb who previously given the University library his rare book collection. The Whitcomb contributions were to never leave the library but be used for research purposes only. However, over the years students would sneak the books from Whitcombs collection to their room and on each occasion the students reported being tormented in their sleep by a ghost demanding their return the book. A new library opened in 1956 and at that time Whitcomb's books were secured behind lock and key and that is where they sit to this day.

What do we know as fact? Governor James Whitcomb did entrust books from his personal collection to Asbury University, now Depauw University. Shortly after donating the books a student snuck one of Whitcomb's restricted books to his room to finish reading it and during the night was touched on his cheek by Whitcomb's ghost. The next day the boy returned the book to the library, told the librarian what happened, and now the book is under lock & key puported to be a haunted book.
