Helen Keller... who needs say more? An amazing person with the absolutely INCREDIBLE ability to overcome MULTIPLE disabilities. She is someone who personifies bravery, courage, perseverance, strength, and confidence. She is a great person for anyone to be in contact with. There isn't any reason she wouldn't be a great person to receive advice & guidance from or just bask in her energy... she is a wonderful influence!

Join us! How? You join by finding quiet space where you can be undisturbed while trying to channel. Be in a comfortable position, light candles, incense or play music if it helps you get into the mood. Loosely concentrate on the person you are trying to connect with and allow your energy to be released from within you and surround you. Open yourself to contact in a positive manner. When it is a group effort we will be sending energy along with yours and the group effort will help boost channeling. Even if there are times we can't participate certainly forum members can do these together as well.

You won't always hear their voice or have them appear to you in vision. Sometimes it is just channeling feelings, tidbits of emotion & memories. Any feedback is good feedback and we'll share everything with each other here!

I'll try to make this one too, I grew up in Alabama not far from where she was born and know a good bit about her at least from what I learned in Alabama History class and since she was a great and amazing lady and she never fails to amaze me when I think about her even still. :think:

I was so disappointed to realize that the OP was from 2009. I was all about taking part in this event, until I spotted the date. Drat.

You are the third person I know of, directly or indirectly, who has interacted with Helen Keller. The other two are deaf-blind themselves. One is a lady who by now should be in her late 70s, who wrote to Helen Keller when she was a girl and got a letter in response. My friend grew into one of the first, if not THE first, person born deaf-blind who achieved a Masters Degree. The other one recently passed away: Robert Smithdas. He and Helen Keller worked together on creating a training center for deaf-blind people that is now known as the Helen Keller National Center in Sands Point, NY. It's a residential program and teaches deaf-blind people various things from independent living skills to how to use assistive technology. I actually never met him myself, but three of my friends were very close with him. So in this case, I indirectly knew one person who knew Helen Keller.

I wish I could have met Helen Keller, too. But I didn't get involved with sign language and deaf-blindness until 20 years after her passing. But I can at least say I spent about 5 years walking the same Earth as her.

Of course, being only 2 or 3 degrees of separation from her is still kind of cool.

I was born legally blind, barely seeing in one eye, and seeing light and dark in the left eye.

I was sent to the Will's Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, and was given to some experimental things, weird chemistries, and mental extercises, and herbs, and by the time I was in 7th grade, I could see quite well, and currently have perfect sight in one eye and relatively good site in the other. But I notice that my perceptions are much more based on the Light of form, than on the form of the light.

The deaf-blind man I work with on Fridays actually visited Helen Keller's childhood home in Alabama. He was with two other sighted friends, who took photos.

When he got back, I was looking at some of the pics of his vacation (not realizing yet that he'd taken a side trip to Alabama) and I saw one that puzzled me. A pic of an old-fashioned water pump. Then, before I could ask anything, he and his mom started describing Helen Keller's house and I realized that the pictures wasn't merely of *A* water pump, but *THE* water pump, where Helen had her epiphany that those handshapes actually have meaning. It was a goosebump moment, for sure. I went back and studied that photo for a long time.

Interestingly, he was the first deaf-blind person that the museum workers had ever met. So of course they took down the velvet ropes so he could touch various artifacts.

My friend who is DB is on the left, in the wheelchair. (The same mitochondrial disorder that affected his optic nerves and auditory nerves, has affected other nerves in his body and he can't walk anymore.) He uses ASL signs to communicate. Helen Keller used tactile fingerspelling first, and then learned the method called Tadoma (placing her hand on the speaker's face/throat) later. I'm not sure if there are any more people still living who use Tadoma. (Robert Smithdas, mentioned above, was one of the three or four remaining Tadoma users several years ago, but he and at least one other person have passed away since then.)

There was at least one remake of A Miracle Worker where Patty Duke played Annie Sullivan. I thought that was a nice touch, and that movie was well-done. But the original version, when she played Helen, was groundbreaking.
