When you’re new to the paranormal everything seems bright & shiny and the world is brand new again… which is awesome! However, for some they find unwelcome surprises in their journey because they take unnecessary risks.

Your paranormal journey should always suit who you are, motivate you to take some big steps, and keep you on a constant path of evolution. It should not make you uncomfortable or uneasy. There are some simple steps to make sure you enjoy a no-risk paranormal journey and not fall into the cavernous depths of para-anxiety.

Do not venture into the Black Arts

Yes, I know the bad-ass demon you saw in a shop was the coolest thing you’ve ever seen… until it becomes your worst nightmare. The Black Arts can seem like the perfect outlet for your frustrations. Whether you’re working with curses, hexes, malicious magick, or BA spirits or entities like demons, you’re not getting what you’re paying for… you’re getting a LOT more and with little reward. The next time you see a tempting BA listing don’t say to yourself “Why, yes, I’d like a big demon to go annihilate everyone who’s ever pissed me off!” What you’re really getting is a monstrous headache the likes of which you could have never dreamed. For most in the paranormal you’d gladly welcome a swirly in a public bathroom over how you’re going to deal with getting rid of the big, bad-ass demon you thought was the answer to everything. Save yourself a lot of time & trouble, don’t stray onto the Black Arts path; demons are not the Chuck Norris of the paranormal world (Wraiths are).

Make short-term and long-term plans

The paranormal is the perfect path for those who want to let everyone else be ordinary while you skip happily along your way with more at your disposal than anyone around you realizes. People who find this site or who pursue this path are not normal, they’re exceptional. They don’t want the hum-drum life everyone else is chained to, they want a way to excel. For these reasons when you choose to go on a paranormal path you need to think about both your short-term and long-term goals. What would you like to fix, evolve into, and expand with in the next year? What would you like to do in the next 5 years, or 10 years? If you take the time to sit down, write out some goals for the immediate future and distant future you’ll find you can plan a very productive & effective journey. This will help you in choosing the right spells & spirits to help you get your journey off the ground and then ways for you to sustain a long & productive journey for years to come.

Don’t let yourself become misinformed

It’s always good to ask questions, lots of questions. Reading and learning is an important part of your journey but be aware of where you are getting your information from. It’s okay to be a skeptic; just because you’re into the paranormal doesn’t mean you need to believe everything. Always consider the source; how long have they been around? What are their qualifications? Is their material just a regurgitated, quasi change from what you’re read on reliable sites? The more you read, the more you learn, the more you surround yourself with valuable and real information the easier it will be for you to spot fakes & the disingenuous. These days anyone with half a brain for computers can put up a website, and make up any credentials they want, but do they have the longevity to prove it?

Make every step a positive move

Whether you’re into the White Arts or Dark Arts it’s important you make every move you make a move in the right direction. Sometimes you can get wrapped up in something and before you know it you’re feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. The best thing you can do it try to maintain clarity in your journey. Make wise choices with friends in the community, use your goals list to plan out the different abilities, powers, and skills you wish to develop and evolve within, and keep yourself surrounded by people & information that is conducive to the level of expertise you wish to grow into throughout the length of your journey. Do not let yourself become anxious, worried, or second guess yourself to a point you cheat yourself out of this amazing path. Stay focused on what you want and don’t let anyone rob you of your journey.

Never forget you’re not alone

If you do find yourself getting overwhelmed it’s important to remember you’re not alone. There are people around you who have been there & done that. They have already gone through the difficulties you’re having and they can offer you invaluable and priceless advice. We’ve all had our time as a newbie, our growing pains, and our obstacles to overcome. Remember this and never be too proud to reach out and ask for help because there is always someone here who will reach back and give you a hand. No one wants to see you fail or lose your chance in this path.

Excellent advice! And judging from crisis threads I've seen when people have gotten in over their heads, it's advice that can't be repeated often enough.

But since Magnolia and Ash are often the cleanup crew for folks in crisis, when things go south, I would expect them to be very well-versed in where the pitfalls lie that beginners fall into most often. Not to mention, good knowledge of how to avoid falling in said pitfalls in the first place.

I do agree with you, and Yes _now I am going off topic....your last paragraph reads beautifully. Caiyros

All sound advice. The "don't venture into BA" though....depends on your definition of Black Arts. If you mean keeping a ravening something that wants to eat your face, then I certainly agree! I would like to hear what you think about DA demons. Do you consider there IS such a thing? Are they all a bad lot out to destroy you? Really would like to know what everyone thinks! Get a few different opinions.

Good thing I wasn't planning on venturing into the black arts! Certainly not my cup of tea. I'm Wiccan and the closest I dare go near black arts is grey arts. 1mg
