This is basically what the stories made it out to be but I'm not sure if it's the reason for that myth in the first place.
Don't forget that the sunlight at least weakens other races of vampires too in different cultures, so it didn't just come from 19th century fiction.
Normally it's the fire that's cleansing, not just the sun, one of the reasons witches were burnt...

There's also a possibility that the undead (generally) can only walk in the night, since the sun is a live-giver and therefore anathema to their existence.

Another possibility would be that the light brings truth and the immortality of vampires is based on stealing blood and therefore a lie and their existence can't handle the truth being revealed by the light.

I rather apply Occam's Razor and go for the most obvious and easy solution.

Whoops, I just realized you were basically explicitly talking about the burning to dust thingy, so you can basically mostly disregard my previous post on that.

Although I think in this case, again, the simplest reason is the most probable.
What sounds better in a movie/book? "Oh, no, Sunlight, I get slightly inconvenienced and weaker now!" or "Curses, Sunlight! Oh, NNOOOOOOOooooooo *turns to dust while poofing*"
