As spirits they seem to be more forgiving of this blunder but it still irritates them from my experience so the words 'thank you' are best avoided at least in my experience.

Precision of language. Thanks is terribly imprecise, and with all fae you want no room for them to interpret what you said any way than what you meant. It has been the blunder of many a mortal dealing with them to have left a bit of vagueness somewhere in their speech.

For the most part yes. Djinn tend to misuse vagueness if you go by older tails.

That is all kinds of interesting! Although I am now hesitant to thank you.shiningshadow33 wrote:The words 'thank you' do not have a distinction between present and future; thank you may easily be interpreted as "I will thank you" thus getting one indebted to the sidhe in question, at least with living sidhe. As spirits and living entities they see it as more of an insult than much else because it is seen as a form of mocking them. Saying thank you to a brownie for example offends them because they help people because they want to, not in order to be thanked, so the term thank you is a great blow to their honor and pride. A truly pissed off brownie is how boggarts are sometimes made, and a living boggart can be a horrible house guest.

Lol. Oh and human hyperboles can also lead to one being in a less than pleasant situation; example the saying "I am so hungry I could eat a horse" can be taken literally by the sidhe. Leading to the human in question having to actually eat an entire horse, predictably failing and than being punished for the lie they just spouted. The sidhe themselves can not outright lie but they can twist the truth by either withholding pieces of information or using wording in its most literal meaning, something people are not usually used to. As spirits they seem less inclined to do this but living sidhe can and do employ these methods of misdirection when they see fit.

This is very interesting, I didn't think of the "thank you" aspect in that way with brownies and so on. I'm happy to have come across this

ISN'T IT HARD TO GET RID OF "THANK YOU?!" It's been ingrained in us so long it's almost a tic!

Yeah it's pretty much automatic lol. Especially being Canadian. :p But honestly no one is bothered by it I won't stress about it. I at least now understand why it's considered that way by brownies, as I never understood that

Just out of recent interest, a blog post explains the origins of the use of the phrases "please" and "thank you"...
https://www.brainpickings.org/2013/07/2 ... thank-you/
...which may go to explain why such beings don't like such phases. In short: these phrases assume a relationship to be akin to a credit-debt transaction, which throws a spanner in the works if one wants to be on good terms with them.
On a different note: I do wonder how literal-minded these faeries are...It sounds to me they wouldn't be able to handle irony or sarcasm very well...

Now, my own suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose. I have read and heard many attempts at a systematic account of it, from materialism and theosophy to the Christian system or that of Kant, and I have always felt that they were much too simple.-- J. B. S. Haldane
