Oo that's a neat one : D

What is that yellow ribbon?
What's the design of the guard and the pommel there?
Is it inside the scabbard, or is the blade oxidized?
How long is it? And how heavy?

Aight, and please ask him how he maintains the sword as well, e.g. oiling & polishing etc : )

Mmmh, can you try weighing the sword with weight scale to verify? E.g. with normal bodyweight scale, first you measure your own weight, and then lift the sword and measure the combine weight, lastly subtract the result : )

Since generally sword weighs less than 2.0 kg. Long sword and bastard sword (length 100-130 cm) are usually 1.0-2.0 kg, even two-handed great sword (length 180 cm) weigh less than to around 4.5 kg, for ceremonial use, not combat. Combat-purposed ones would be around 3.5 kg or less. If that one is really over 15.0 kg, that'll be a very interesting specimen : )

That's almost identical to my sword, although no spirits are attached to this one and I don't really know its history. Sorry about the awful picture quality.

My eyes confirm. Same hilt design and pommel.

Maybe they're similar, because your ancestors served in the same army or the blacksmith forged weapons for multiple armies. Or it just was a common design of swords those days.
Wings were mostly seen as a symbol of angels (protection) or birds (like a pidgeon= peace; or eagle= strenght, freedom), so a wing design makes a good crossguard for faithful soliders.
Nice weapon, I wish I would descend from knights :p
