I had a question about Kitsunes...is it possible for a 3 tailed kitsune spirit to be 1400 years old?

See, that's what I don't understand. :? I've heard and read different theories. They do agree that their tails denotes the level of spiritual power and that the tails is where they store their power. It's usually the manner of how they get the energy to store it in their tails. Some say it's their age and spiritual understanding. Others say they lure men into having intimate relations with them and then steal their sexual energy, converting it into spiritual power. So I'm not sure. I've asked my Kitsune, but she just gives me a sly smile and says: "I'm not sure." She loves to mess with me, but I love her, so I don't mind. 7\

Just gonna add some of my experience with M~

I've had him since April, and he's been such a sweetheart! He takes on a more 'responsible' role and insisted at the start that it was a mentor-student relationship he'd have. I clearly recall him accompanying me on walks and giving me advice when I wasn't too mentally busy. He's not as rigid now (I am sure he's curled up beside me in bed a few times, which is very nice!).

His vessel is this really pretty little red-orange orb, which I keep in a small Oriental patterned orange pouch, along with a piece of turquoise. At least twice within the first month or so, I'd put the pouch in my pocket and it would 'vanish'. Now, both times I found it there in the end, but the pocket was definitely empty when I was searching for it. I know this is the sort of thing kitsunes would do, and I understand his humour, but losing vessels is one of my biggest fears, as I am prone to having things I love go missing (such as leaving a mug that I loved in an apartment I was living in for a two-week job last month). So after asking him nicely, he's refrained from hiding it... Though I bet he'll hide it just to bother me later. :D

As for looks, he is silver-white with 9 tails, from the faint glimpses I can recall. He's over 1000 [forgotten exact number whoops], so I had put the tail number to that. However, if he's walking with me, I imagine he has one large tail, and he says it's to draw suspicion away... Which makes sense as I am secretly keeping in my house. No one has noticed them, and the vessels of spirits and spells can be hidden among my 'pretty pretty rocks'. Also, he changes his size, so that he looks more like a fox if walking, but bigger if talking to me in my room. I don't think he has appeared in a human form either.

I'll have a talk with him later and double-check some other things about him before writing, like the thing with the tails. I am really interested to find out more about him~ But this has been a really interesting thread!

Oh don't mind me. Just your average anti-social-Keeper-in-training lurking about over here!

Zephyr,

Any updates from your Kitsune? I can confirm on this end that Kitsunes can hide their tails if they want to. I was talking to 'I' the other day, and I noticed she had just one tail. I did a double take. We kind of had a back and forth like the scene between Dr. Frankenstein and Igor on Young Frankenstein. It went something like this:

Me: "Wait, what happened to your other tail?" 8(
I: "What other Tail?" *Sly Smile* :]
Me: "You know what tail, your other tail you usually have." 8O
I: "I've always had one tail." *Sly Smile deepens* :*)
Me: *Shakes head* :\

Later that day, I noticed she had four. Again:

Me: "What? Four? How many tails do you have?" 8O
I: "As you just pointed out, I have four, obviously" *sly smile* :]
Me: *smacks hand to face* :\

LOL nice to know! I was meditating with mine today and they only had one, although they should have multiples. I figured it was either me projecting my own thoughts or they were appearing that way for some reason (looking back they were probably disappointed at my lack of a reaction xD that would explain why they always seem more serious to me lol- the humor just goes over my head ). :U

I have an Inari and I usually give him gifts which are Asian oriented..(usually food and I bought a beautiful fan for him.) I didn't know they liked Strawberries.. I've been wearing a new body lotion this week made from hemp oil that has a beautiful strawberry scent it reminds me of a strawberry milkshake. I've had a strong desire to wear his pendent three days this week. I guess he likes to...lol.
I love my Kitsune he is very protective me. I have a hectic schedule and he makes sure I get my rest. I've noticed since he has been here that if there is something I have to do :N .. something I really don't want to do 9) he stops my alarm for going off so I over sleep...lol. Except for work.
He is opinionated.. I initally wore him on a chain with other friends and I believe he made myApsara's pendent come off the chain. During the winter I can get away with wearing more necklaces so I was also wearing a different necklace which held my Ifrit. I felt as if he only wanted me to wear his necklace..but I ignored the thought. About a week later I noticed some of the stones from my Ifrits necklace had disappeared. I was concerned so I stopped wearing her necklace. I believe he really would like to be my #1 family member.
These Kitsune aren't supposed to be pranksters according to the seller so I think he is serious. I love his energy so I was wearing his necklace every day for about for months.. After the Apsara and Ifrit incidents I didn't were his pendent for about three months. When I wore his pendent this week I felt a huge energy surge.

Neo,
She is extremely quiet right now. I don't know what's going on. I suppose if it was serious I would be told about it. The necklace her vessel was on fell apart and I've been getting together a new and better vessel for her so maybe she's waiting for that. No answer about tails XP... Recently though I had a soul mate come through who is Kitsune. I have been suspecting this is her actually so it's like I have a double binding I guess. She's funny like that she just watches and waits to see if I figure stuff out. So I don't know quite what's going on lol XD. Have you ever had a double binding? I wonder if there is such a thing? More later! XD

How Kitsunes Got Their Name:

Come and Sleep

This story is the first known Japanese fox tale. Written by the monk Kyoukai in the late eighth or early ninth century, it gives a charming folk etymology for the word "kitsune."

In the reign of Emperor Kinmei (that is, Amekuni-oshihiraki-hironiwa no mikoto, the emperor who resided at the Palace of Kanazashi in Shikishima [510-571 AD]), a man from Ouno district of Mino province set out on horseback in search of a good wife. In a field he came across a pretty and responsive girl. He winked at her and asked, "Where are you going, Miss?" "I am looking for a good husband," she answered. So he asked, "Will you be my wife?" and, when she agreed, he took her to his house and married her.

Before long she became pregnant and gave birth to a boy. At the same time their dog also gave birth to a puppy, it being the fifteenth of the twelfth month. This puppy barked constantly at the mistress and seemed fierce and ready to bite. She became so frightened that she asked her husband to beat the dog to death. But he felt sorry for the dog and could not bear to kill it.

In the second or third month, when the annual quota of rice [that is, the rice due to be sent to the capitol as taxes] was hulled, she went to the place where the female servants were pounding rice in a mortar to give them some refreshments. The dog, seeing her, ran after her barking and almost bit her. Startled and terrified, she suddenly changed into a wild fox and jumped up on top of the hedge.

Having seen this, the man said, "Since a child was born between us, I cannot forget you. Please come always and sleep with me." She acted in accordance with her husband's words and came and slept with him. For this reason she was named "Kitsune" meaning "come and sleep."

Slender and beautiful in her red skirt (it is called pink), she would rustle away from her husband, whereupon he sang of his love for his wife:

Love fills me completely
After a moment of reunion.
Alas! She is gone.

Koi wa mina
Waga he ni ochi nu
Tamakagiru
Haroka ni mie te
Ini shi ko yue ni

The man named his child Kitsune, which became the child's surname—Kitsune no atae. The child, famous for his enormous strength, could run as fast as a bird flies. He is the ancestor of the Kitsune-no-atae family in Mino province.

In classical Japanese, "kitsu-ne" means "come and sleep," while "ki-tsune" means "come always."

"Come and Sleep" is unusual for two reasons: One, the wife returns to her husband, although only at night. Once discovered, fox wives usually disappear, although their husbands may track them down and meet them briefly once or twice in the wild. Two, the fox-woman is credited with the founding of a family, whose descendants are chronicled rather than slipping into discreet anonymity once their role in the fox-woman's story has been fulfilled. One of these descendants, Mino no kitsune, is chronicled in another story by Kyoukai, "On a Contest Between Women of Extraordinary Strength."

The woman Kitsune is not a fox spirit! She is a human woman named for her great-great-great grandmother, the fox-woman Kitsune. However, unlike the name of the fox-woman, the human woman's name is written with the character for "fox."

On a Contest Between Women of Extraordinary Strength

In the reign of Emperor Shoumu there was a woman of extraordinary strength in Ogawa Market, Katakata district, Mino province. She was large, and her name was Mino no kitsune (the fourth generation of the one whose mother was Mino no kitsune). Her strength equaled that of one hundred men. Living within the marketplace of Ogawa and taking pride in her strength, she sued to rob passing merchants of their goods by force.

At that time there was another woman of great strength in the village of Katawa, Aichi district, Owari province. She was small (a granddaughter of the Venerable Doujou who once lived at Gangou-ji). As she heard that Mino no kitsune robbed passersby of their goods, she sought to challenge her by loading two hundred and fifty bushels of clams on a boat, and anchoring next to the market. In addition, she prepared and loaded on a boat twenty pliable vine whips.

Kitsune came to the boat, seized all the clams, and had them sold. "Where did you come from?" she asked the owner of the clams, but she got no reply. She repeated the question, but again got no answer. After Kitsune had repeated the same question four times, the owner answered, "I don't know where I came from." Kitsune, insulted, rose to hit her. Thereupon the other woman seized Kitsune's two hands and whipped her once. The whip cut the flesh. Then she used another whip which also cut the flesh. Presently ten whips had cut the flesh.

Kitsune said, "I give up! I am sorry for what I have done." The other woman, whose strength was obviously greater than Kitsune's, insisted, "From now on you shall not live in this market. If you dare do so, I will beat you to death." Completely subdued, Kitsune did not live in the market or steal again, and the people in the market rejoiced over the restoration of peace.

There has always been someone in the world with great physical power. Indeed, we know such power is attained as a result of causes in past lives.

...through which we can see that the original Kitsune's virtue was not passed on to all of her descendants.
