One of the rescues is having trouble with pain. I think it is arthritis due to the severity of the injuries he suffered in the hands of his abuser. He whimpers when he needs to jump up onto something or down from something. Does anyone have any ideas as to what we can give him to ease his pain?

My first dog was a little elderly Chihuahua. We got her little doggie stairs since she couldn't jump up on the sofa herself. You might be able to get him doggie stairs so he can get up and down under his own power.
There are meds for canine arthritis pain. I'm not sure what they're called, but they do exist because my friend's senior dog was on them. Watch out with Rimadyl -- they don't like to put dogs on it for too long, as it can hurt either the liver or the kidneys, I forget which. But it's a potent anti-inflammatory and if you want a quick "get this pain gone!" solution for the short term, the doc might offer you some of that. My Chihuahua was on that briefly for neck pain (which fortunately went away and didn't recur). She also had some Tramadol when her neck was acting up. That's a med that humans take, too. The pills were cut into tiny little doses since she was such a little dog.

Oh, and what I think of the abuser doesn't bear repeating in polite company. Too bad THEY aren't the one aching, instead of the innocent dog. Freaking sociopath.

Thanks. L2R. I will look for the OTC stuff, and if it gets worse, will get him to a vet. He is getting worse, and just whimpers for no reason at times. He suffered horribly under the abuser that had him before I got him. He is paying the price for someone's foolishness and treachery.
Sociopath is a polite way of putting it. They should be in jail for what they did to him.

I always say, that what goes around, will always come back around and in this case for the person who did that to a defenseless animal, it can come back around times three!!!! I have no compassion for someone who does that to any animal or human!!!! **
I hope your little guy will get better soon, I know this cold weather can be hard on anyone, animal and human with arthritis!!!!

I hope so, Starfire. The abuse he suffered is unreal.

I'm sorry to hear that your rescue is in pain. If only we could give the pain some animals feel over to their abusers!
Through your vet you can get Metacam, which is a good general painkiller (usually used for arthritis and torn ACL). It's not cheap, but definitely not as pricey as the stronger stuff. It's a nice daily dose that goes in their food and is easy on the kidneys. I've seen it do wonders for so many dogs. A low dose of an anti-inflammatory like Tylenol does help too. My mother used to give our old dog the kid's chewables when he was having joint pain - but he was a big lab, so take the dog's size into account. I'd recommend talking to a vet about that, though! They'll know your dog and what's best for them.
A heat pad under a blanket or dog bed will do wonders for achey bones and joints, in the meantime.
I hope your friend feels better soon! Sending lots of love to him.
