In all honesty, I recommend an Ifreet, My Ifreet Djinn is absolutely wonderful. As far as how many, I have about 7 Djinn of different types, all get along well.

I have a fair few lol
And from a lot of different types
I don't have Ghuul or Shaitan personally because their energies are to chaotic for my taste, but that doesn't mean I wont some day find a Shaitan or Ghuul that is more my style

I have a rule that they are family for me and because they are my family, they are each others family too
Historically Ifrit and Marid don't like each other because of wars in the past, but that is a stereotype
I have Ifrit and Marid, and they get along well enough

There is certainly no limit. It's not only what you feel comfortable with at various points within your journey. If you are nervous then I would start with one, then progress to bring more in as you feel instinctively ready. Make sure you have strong house rules and make a place for each spirit within your home.
