That would be along the line of 1963's Tezuka's Astro Boy (or Atom Boy, depending on where you are). At least it was the first that got broadcasted outside Japan:)

Astro boy like a lot of anime was originally a Manga. I didn't actually know it was an anime. There is also a really old film called Kimba the white lion, which is a really old anime. There was also films like Akira, Ghost in the shell and studio ghibli films have become extremely popular too. These were some of the first popular stuff in the nineties. There was also Gundam wing if you like Gundam. Then pokemon and as some people have said Sailor moon became popular. Although i would never watch that one. Oh, i forgot DBZ as well.

For me, i first got into anime with Naruto but i've barely watched Shippuden. I'm a big fan of Naoki Urasawa's work but only Monster has been made into an anime. The rest of his works are manga. I'd recommend them though, especially 20th century boys.

"Monster" was good!

Other old anime movies are "8 Man," "Demon City Shinjuku," "Fist of the Northstar," uhh suddenly I'm drawing a blank, I know there were more than that. lol
Oh! "Captain Harlock" and ... what's that one with the train in space?
And the one with the robots ... I know, that's like every damn Japanese show when you say robots lol ... uh "Transzor Z"?
Tons of "Gundam" movies ...

The train one would be Galaxy Express 999:)
The robot one (or mecha), not sure, might be Mazinger Z:I

Ironically my vampires dont care much for vampire themed animes yet they had me watching Twighlight and reading vampire diaries... somethings I'll never get.

Our anime likes are kind of all over the place, my succubus likes Yuko from xxxholic cause shes like an older version of her with biggers boobs. One vampy of mine likes Shingeki no Kyojin or anything actiony while the other is into romances or slice of life. My Angel is usually out and about but if an anime has a good soundtrack, she shows up interested.
The one we all agree on, those food-gasm animes like Shokugeki no Soma, they make us drool over but lately its been Isekai Shokudou.

I guess my mermaid may prefer tv or movies, I tried showing her Pirates of the Carribean the other day.
