Their work helped bring the meta to the modern mainstream and helped make it popular. Good or bad, right or wrong, controversial or not, it brought a degree of awareness to a lot more people (like with the movies).
We probably would not have communities like this if no for people like them, and that's done a lot for Magic.

Sorry, but I disagree. The magical world has come and gone many times to a larger and better "stance" than what we have know....For instance: Ancient Greece, Thrice Greatest Hermes,

Why were things somewhat secret in the past 1840s-99s and most of the 19th century?

The "Gateway" was that you had to prove you were both intelligent and could "show" their personal knowledge of what they had already learned..... This was all changed with the invention of the cell phone...now anyone can be the secret God they wish to be.....I doesn't work that way (obviously) but currently, the knowledge world of the Occult Metaphysical has a lot to learn and seems to "rank that down" to immediate needs, thus never risking doing the learning processes that can only be learned by hard work and study.....The cellphone is a "toy" that creates stupidy and laziness in ALL Areas...Why? Because only a few use a cellphone to transfer imporant complete information....I honor the few here who do that....the rest. well.......????? Who knows

How about those from the East? I think India, Tibet, China, Japan, etc. should have great men of magick as well:I

I'd say Aleister Crowley, based off of how often I've seen his name get brought up in various threads both on the CH forums, as well as on other meta websites in comparison to the others on the list.

Crowley is, by far, the best known and certainly influential, but not the only one

It is kinda funny, I adore Crowley and have worked with his spirit quite closely. Yet with him here I was not compelled to choose or cast that vote.
Great appreciation for Aleister claiming this praise, but I think as far as actually playing the biggest role in *changing* magick (rather distinct), I'd really have to argue Crowley could not have done what he had without the innovative approach certain elders to him had placed - whom he was greatly inspired by. While he was a trailblazer in his own right and introduced some really awesome currents, I don't think he quite changed the entire face of magick with *his* practices. He brought change indeed, but not change to magick as much as change to the consideration and involvement, which I would personally distinguish.
Today while he is often talked about and well known (perhaps part of the reason he would be voted for, as so many others are less familiar to those not yet very versed in the occult world), his actual works are not so commonly perused these days (a shame indeed). He was notorious and I think a more suited acclaim is that he brought notice and attention to the power of the occult world, his presence and presentation acted as a guide for others to find their place in it.

When it comes down to it I'd go back to Austin Osman Spare having more significantly changed magick by preparing our current era for it. I feel he modernized magick with his concepts and manner of conveying ideas - many things that are popular today among occultists are used so efficiently and commonly due to him having made a true practice out of them (such as sigilization) - making them far less removed from us, less exotic, more approachable and in this he was someone who opened the way for chaos magick, being the most versatile and one of the most widely used/incorporated practices today. In a sense he fused magick and the mind in a way anyone could absorb, he made it a very human thing somehow and therefore, accessible, empowered.

Just some thoughts! I hope that those truly interested in the subject are going out of their way to learn about ALL of the men mentioned here.

Of course realistically speaking Ash is definitely (along with Magnolia) changing the face of magick with the innovative bindings and magickal experiences always uniquely being cultivated and introduced to the public. That is a new wave, in which CH are pioneers.

When the meta community as we know it here grows just enough, branching out with significant recognition into the totality of the occult community (which comprises of much, much more than this.. but will get there inevitably as popularity and networking persists), we are totally looking at Ash taking on that role.

If you're going for it, hope you're ready for that kind of attention Ash. Lol.
