The closest that I have gotten to VR is:
3-D from the 1950s
Cinerama from the 1950s
and that aweful large cinema screen that is made up of a multitude of frames with "dark edges" and I don't think any of them are worthwhile.

As far as I can see (pun intended!) the real issue is what I call Flicker Blink and when studying with Vlada Petrich at Harvard Film, we did some experiments with what we named Flicker Blink which is taking early silent films that were photographed with with hard lense focus rather than soft lense focus....thus creating a back ground pic of a different effect of frame lighting, and then slowing down the exact correct speed for the film frames, and using a gadget hooked onto that can control its own flicker time in a number of different ways.

Why go into the past? Several Reasons:

Proven: If you read paper pages on a book, it is responsive "in mind" differently than is you are reading a TV or computer screen. Different aspects and places in the human mind.
Another way, that has its drawbacks is the use of "mind-exchanges of experiencing vision" is to use very low levels of psychedelics, but then again there are a great deal of problems with that, that require no mention.

Right now, I am dealing with Stereoscopes from the and zoetropes from the

Very cool info, Caiyros! The Occulus technology is very new and used mostly for gaming and consuming video media (aka porn :P ).

I watch ALOT of Netflix and Hulu and Google Play.. So regardless if it is helpful with meditation, I'll get my money's worth out of it! :)
