My biggest problem with meditation seems to be that I have absolutely NO concept of time when I am in meditation. What seems like a few minutes can end up being a couple of hours. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

:o My alarm clock is too startling and would probably give me a heart attack, so that's out of the question.

What about if you have a mobile/cell phone and turn it to vibrate and set the alarm. Hopefully that should be gentle enough not to startle you.
Also, try setting your own body clock to bring you around at a set time. I've done this a few times and it's nearly always to the minute i've asked for. It takes a few to practice, but it does work. I will very often do this when i'm doing an energy session so that i know i won't overrun too much if i've got a lot to do.
Or you might want to try those alarm clocks that sound like chirping birds and waterfalls etc... i've got a cd of it and it's very relaxing but using it to bring you round from meditation might not be as traumatic as a normal alarm sound.

Excellent Topazz !!! I read the question and was about to suggest the alarm on the cell phone too before I saw your very thorough answer.
Umbrea, during the day you can tell yourself to look at the clock in 15 minutes, and see how close you are to being right. This will help 'condition' your internal clock. It's easier to start the conditioning process with shorter times (at least this is how it worked for me, not the same for everyone I'm sure).

dear alex - that is a great idea as is topazz's idea of using a cell on vibrate to coax someone out of a deep meditation. alex, i will have to try what you suggest since now that i've finally become good at meditating, i find that i can go under so deep that i've actually astral travelled several recent times and when i came back - it was an hour and a half later! yep alex, think i need to work on your suggestion - or put my cell in my lap with vibrate alarm set for 15 minutes as topazz suggested. you girls are great and many thanks! blessed be. arsine

6dogs, try putting your oven timer (if it is portable) in another room or under a pillow in another room and test it to see if the 'ding' is soft enough for you. Otherwise, you can buy a portable timer at a kitchen supply and do the same with it.
