Angerboda is a shape-shifter whose identity is somewhat unclear. Also known as Gullveig, one of the Vanir spirits, Angerboda was sent to visit the Aesir spirits after they arrived in Vanir territory and had built giant halls, like Valhalla out of gold. She was to ask them for some gold. The Aesir condemned her to death. They speared her and burned her on a pyre. However, she reappeared. This happened three times. The third time, she appeared at her own home, not at Valhalla. The Vanir, extremely upset with Angerboda’s treatment, declared war on the Aesir. A bitter war between the pantheons ensued.

Angerboda is petitioned for magic lessons and foretelling the future. She is also a weather goddess. Offerings include gold, iron, and images of wolves and snakes.
