Nothing really dark about it. That's basically just telepathy.
And it's possible to shield against it or close yourself off from telepathic communication.

Shielding, like Aprophis mentioned, is the best way to keep someone else from intentionally catching your thoughts and from your thoughts penetrating others, who might be unintentionally open for them.
However, people close to you might still be able to interpret your thoughts just by knowing you and reading the situation. Which doesn't mean, that your shielding doesn't work in those situations.

How do you use different voices when doing this?

How does someone control someone's mind whilst hearing their thoughts at the same time?
