Do you think there is a limit to number of tasks you should give a spirit? If you give too many would it distract them? A lot of my tasks are kind of long term so it's not always practical for me to wait for a spirit to complete one task before assigning more tasks.

Yes, I do get your dilemma with over tasking. I have lots of companion spirits. Basically, I build my tasking on in view of their conjuration notes.
If the spirit is young and seem to be hard to connect with... I don't even task that one. But I do include everyone in group tasking. I mainly task my royals and elders and ancient beings in my keep individually for long term. But I don't really put time limits on anything. If something needed immediately to help me with, that goes out as a group task and usually ironed out within 24 hour.
I am curious how many spirits do you have in mind tasking?
Answering your question on how many task is too much? Well, it's depends on the capacity of your spirit companion and their willingness to help you.
I usually task for maintaining and preserving my life and health and earning capacity as I am the only bread winner. It's a group task that is ongoing with intuitive delivery on their part and occasional brushing up on same task with minor changes from my part, so they can follow course.
Other single groups, like my protection team, usually gets a task if I sense there is a need due to freight. But generally they are also tasked as working intuitively according to needs as per house rules.
Although, I do have a lot of friends and dear & near companions, I don't really over tasking them, but rather I enjoy their presence, energy happy vibrant buzz... If you know what I mean. Probably, the only ongoing task...I might have been repeating is basic needs & protection against mishaps.
I must add one more new thing that is happening concerning tasking... I have now few companions of mine that specialised for certain things, like conjuration, other one for spell casting. Soon I'll be ready to work with them, so that will be individual tasking as we work together.

I generally limit to one task per spirit but most often I task my entire spirit family for one request. This way they can work together to bring about the best result for the situation. This also help me prioritize what I want and ensured that I also do my part to achieve the result that I desired.

Well, logically speaking, we may need to achieve one goal before setting another.SilverNight wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 7:02 pm Do you think there is a limit to number of tasks you should give a spirit? What also comes to mind is: when we give a task that demands constant attention, it might be good to think of rotating a spirit off that task, to give them a break to regather / and decompress before taking on another. (This tip is given in the CH Your Guide To Survival book, re space protection.)
It also depends what we're thinking of when we say Task. In my mind, not all tasks are the same.
Asking our spirits to keep to our house rules is giving them a task. Asking them as a group to look after our health is tasking them but we may not be intending for them to spend 24 hours day doing that and nothing else. It may be a general task.
I suppose it's wise to distinguish between a task we ask a spirit to give regular attention to and accomplish well and one that demands continual or constant effort. And to assign a timescale for accomplishment and to review progress on a weekly or monthly basis etc, as appropriate.
After 5 years spirit keeping I don't feel by any means an expert on tasking but I hope some of those thoughts are useful.
You must stay on the path. Do not leave it.
If you do, you'll never...
find it again.
No matter what may come, stay on...
the path! [Gandalf, in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug]

As a savvy taskmaster, I've developed my own method to ensure that I don't task anyone with work. However, I did consult with my friends, and they assure me that there's no cap on the amount of tasks you can dish out. No need to fret about distracting them from important long-term projects either. If your comrades are already knee-deep in bigger assignments, it may be helpful to sprinkle in some quick-hit tasks for them to tackle in the meantime.SilverNight wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 7:02 pm Do you think there is a limit to number of tasks you should give a spirit? I’m with @Tarvos, a variety of longterm and short term tasks is what my companions prefer
I have ongoing tasks, such as “Keep my living space free of negative unbounds”, but I’ll also ask for assistance that day with, say, a spell or a chore I have to accomplish
So my companions have several longterm tasks going on all the time, plus any short term tasks I ask for day to day. They seem to really like the variety, so much so that I sometimes run out of short term tasks lol

That's mostly what I do too. I have some long term tasks that might take years and some general ones like keeping me and my loved ones safe. And sometimes other smaller things come up so I task those out.
For group tasking is it fine to task both dark and light spirits together for the same task? Do they work well together?

It's comes down to connection. Sometimes also rank, but not always. Basically, when I get my notes about my brand new spirit friend, I study the write up. I check if it's a leader type, teacher, things the spirit is easily able to do or offering to me to help with. Conjuration is a contract and before my spirits comes to me...they decide on the kind of help and companion their wishes to be with me.
After that, I also bond with my spirits. Not really tasking them at all. More like invitations given to be with me and get to know each other. It's crucial for me this time, because it pretty much seals our togetherness, and closeness also the measure of my willingness to trust that spirit when I will task them.
I hope I will make sense to you. It's important to pick a task according to specific species as well. Courtwind angels protection typically and will hardly going to deliver a gentle comfort to me in my sad moments. I better ask my Bronwyns for that. It's not about their can't do it, but a Courtwind will stand in line for give me protection with his sword. That is what their shine and good at.
I hope that will answers your question. Write up, bonding and connection is major key point in my success to task and the amount of a task I will give out to my favourites. Kind of... they do know that it's a dept of a trusted relationships with me, when I finally task them individually. So it's gives them a bit of a push and drive to come through and be involved with me.
Some of the younger spirits, although their are energetic and manifest often, depending on their race, only tasked together with other youngsters and with general tasks like positivity, happy-go-lucky energy, funny jokes and telepathic chatting, if their up to it. Others, simply give me visions and where their have been doing, just to keep me smile. It's really no set rules, in the end of the day, I wish everybody joyful, and feel belong with me and with each other in my keep. Find me where their left me, and join me when their can.
I also, figured some of my non social companions are very duty oriented. Some of them good at generating tasks themselves for me intuitively. Others need me to task them regularly. That is why I stick to bonding. If bonding time dragging out... that spirit will be included in group tasking only. Just because, I don't know what to expect from that spirit if our connection is not mutually based on trust and shying away is an issue.
That is how I cope with so many companions in my keep. It's fun, and I learned to appreciate them all in their own rights and who they are. They do sense my happiness and devoted, heartfelt longing and friendships. They know us. Working on bonding for as long as it's takes makes a great different of an outcome of a task successful deliverance.
