I remember this one, it was "CROATOAN".ASH-MDA wrote:I KNOW THERE WAS SOMETHING CARVED INTO A TREE THAT THEY THINK ONE OF THE SETTLERS CARVED BUT I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS.
It might mean the name of the local tribe who took them in.

There was a tree carved with CRO and a fence post found with Croatan....the name of a local band of Indians that were members of the Algonquin Indian tribes. My question would be....if they went willingly....why not carve a better note? If they went unwillingly....how did they have time to carve at ALL?

I wrote this spell for the seance last night. Much work to do! I want to write and present a small history of the Colony as well...
"Stripped of Thy Magick and Mystery,
Roanoke Island Colony, I call upon your spirits!
Reveal to our sensing,
The true destiny that befell thee long ago.
For we would KNOW."

I am considering the following theories/stories about what happened:
1. Physician Thomas Crowley was said to be a Vampyre who went mad after a long sea voyage and slaughtered the colonists.
2. Killed by Indians. The colonists had made a habit of stealing from their neighbors. They would take hostages, then trade them back to the Natives for food and staples.
3. Moved. Food and water became scarce during a period of drought, which might have forced the colonists to seek a better area.
4. Raiders. Other visitors from overseas could have visited the colony for the purpose of looting.
5. Wendigo. Native legends tell about this creature attacking the greedy and amoral. Wendigo are said to protect the native people.
6. Sickness. Maybe a plague or serious illness befell the colonists.
7. Joined the Native Indians during a time of severe drought and abandoned the colony site.

I know the history channel did a program on it. There is speculation that at least some of them died of cyanide ingestion. It was found in the soil at the site of the settlement and in the bones of the buried.

I have seen some evidence that the colony was actually sabotaged, so I am adding that theory. Some of the men responsible for the existence of the colony had enemies. The colony was a business, and competing men wanted it to fail.Huffette wrote:I know the history channel did a program on it. That would explain how the poison was introduced into their water supply

Every native Carolinian has heard this story ... at least I hope so!
I once saw the outdoor production of "The Lost Colony" when I was little.
Fascinating mystery.

I see. So this is it. It lies here within this palm. The heart.
