It’s sometimes possible that we interpret what we perceive through the filter of the topics that are already on our mind. I would think if the person in question had wanted to address Zeus, and was aware you are his companion, he’d have wanted to acknowledge him aloud.

It's important to have confidence in our abilities, or we will have a hard time achieving anything in the paranormal. But remember that we are all fallible. That stray thought that seemed to come from that total stranger might have had an entirely different source. Most folks are not psychically operating at that level, to be able to look at someone and recognize a spirit keeper or send a message to them mentally. If he had really picked up on it and wanted to say something to you about it, he could have addressed you verbally.

Plus there is also the possibility of the fella is unsure so he send a telepathy thought to him instead of voicing out and then says its not him or its not what he meant in fear of him getting prejudice look and being labelled crazy? Plus if OP as Zues with him, he should be able to hear them right? I mean if you are a psychic and saw that and you unsure that will be your safest way to do it isn't it? :X You cannot rule out that.
