does the claim that its pagan in origin bare any truth? i also saw someone claiming to be a wiccan saying that its a genuine wiccan ritual for some reason. neither sound quite right to me.

It does have a small part of history in a little village in England though. They used to force petty criminals to go through with the game and only gave them one match to ensure they lost according to the rules. Shortly afterwords (relatively) it became more of a game than a punishment.
