Advice from advocates, like Timothy Leary, was to take care with the set and setting, to ensure a good trip. To me, similarly, protection techniques set you up for a positive, safe experience. Otherwise, it's too easy to kind of connect with your worries, anxieties, fears and so-called 'lower', bad energies or beings attracted by that.

The astral is very responsive and fluid - perhaps like the subconscious, which could be why some people apparently nowadays consider the astral to be part of our shared, mass subconscious. It's fluidity is also why it's possible to do magic workings there, change our astral appearance and even design and protect our own corner of the astral.

One book recommended here several times is Robert Bruce's Astral Dynamics.

I rate DJ Conway on such things. Although I don't have this book of hers, it'll probably be very good:

Those kind of books are about learning to travel for oneself. You'll probably come across one that resonates with you.

However I've found CH's safe, protected portal travel to be a revelation. It takes you 'there' and your relevant body has the experience, which is fed back to your conscious mind. A journey to a spiritual realm location is experienced by your spiritual body, & by your astral body if it's to an astral realm location. There's one in the CH Advanced Spirit Keeping book and I think there are items for that in the Shop.

However maybe it helps to have experienced astral travel first, in order to get the best from such things.

One piece of advice I'd like to offer is: don't get hung up on how hard it must be to leave the body. It isn't. That's just a self formed block, as I see it. We leave it all the time during sleep and probably just don't notice when we slip out a bit during waking hours - much like the fact that most of us are in and out of a light trance state during the day anyway.

As spirit keepers we can also invite our specialist protection spirits to accompany us during realm travel.
