I can only bring two events that I believe were successful projection out of my body... first time was under the influence of certain substances (which I will not disclose, and will strongly suggest you steer clear of because I was not in full control) and the other time, when I was directly willing my body and spirit to separate, I managed to get about a foot out of my body, feeling around, sensing with my "astral eyes" as it were, until my ferret decided to snap me back to my body.

How I did it was following the "build your astral body in your mind" I think, and then a "bring your awareness into this new astral body." Though I don't know how that will be applicable to your practice.

It's hard though... I mean, astral projection is quite difficult to get a complete separation of the mind from the body. I mean, you can probably get a partial separation, but a complete separation is the holy-grail and quite the feat.
