You know, a lot of things have very interesting structures when seen under microscopes. One of the more facinating structures that have evolved is that of the bacteriophage, as it looks like a little machine, but as far as we know that is just how it evolved, so I don't doubt that natural substances and creatures would have an odd looking structure. I also want to reference the pelican, or assassin spider. Their bodies have evolved a tower-like head to be able to attack spiders from an angle that normal spiders can't defend from, and to those who've never seen it, it is definitely alien looking.
