It's also been very helpful for helping to center in on an illness for the animal. I've been able to tell exactly where the ailment is more than 90% of the time.
First, I recommend choosing an animal that will be comfortable with you if you are trying this for the first time. It is very hard to read a nervous or otherwise uncomfortable animal.
Next get as close to the animal's eye level as possible. If you can make eye contact, great! It may not work the first couple of times. I practice on my guinea pigs as they never mind staring at me for long amounts of time!
Relax yourself, relax and empty your mind of the thoughts in there. Look into the animals eyes, let them look into yours. Create a connection between the two of you. You should almost feel the exchange of energy between you and most of the time, almost feel yourself becoming the animal. On many occasions I have lost all sense of self and have felt completely at one with the animal.
What sometimes helps, is "looking past" the eyes. Look into them but past them if that makes sense. You may also breathe in as the animal breathes out, breathe out as it breathes in, another way of becoming one with the animal.
You should begin to receive images from the animal. With my bird, I routinely see images of sky, of other birds, water, food, etc. It's at this point, instead of words, try communicating in symbols and pictures that the animal will understand. For a dog about to go through surgery, I will usually send images of him sleeping in bed, being pet by his owners, I do not send him images of him being cut open though lol, that'd be bad. I just basically try to calm him and say he's going to sleep like he would at home.
With animals who are about to be euthanized, I will give images of running through open fields, playing, and over all happiness.
In response to the images you give, you should get images back from the animal.
In time you can communicate in words and images, but I find it easiest to do mostly images and such.
Don't be disappointed if this doesn't happen the first time, like all things it takes practice and time. And some animals just really don't feel like talking sometimes, just like us humans. I've been doing this with my puppy and I now find her staring at me, sending me images. She's the one initiating contact!
