I have always enjoyed the story of Queen Victoria & the finger bowl, and this is a recent, documented example that sometimes, just sometimes, people of power have real class.

On the more cynical side of the coin...

Could it also be seen as a move that had the intentions to boost his reputation and strengthen his position of religious authority?

What would the crowd's reaction have been, had he rejected the boy? As opposed to what he did?

Certainly.. it could very well have been a genuine reaction by the pope... just posing another side to it for consideration.

Well, we have seen this particular Pope to be very different from the ones before him. He doesn't sleep in "posh" quarters, he refuses anything in excess in terms of limousines and such, his political and social views are a bit more evolved, more so than any other Pope in the recent decades....I don't think it was a marketing strategy....I am not Catholic, my family is, though...its hard not to follow the news when he angers many people of his own church. I was moved by the story. I am glad things are changing inside the Vatican.
