I don't want to burst your bubble, but your accident may have been completely normal.

TLDR: The front of cars are designed to crash. The rear of cars will crumple a lot. You also may have some unseen damage on your vehicle.

I spent a lot of time looking into car accident safety recently as I wanted to buy a car with very good accident safety.

Your car impacted at the front - that is the best possible angle and location you can have in an accident. Cars are tested on front collisions and the results get published publicly - which is why manufacturers give good attention for front collisions so that they don't get bad reviews.

The other person was hit on the rear. Vast majority of accident pics will show you that all cars significantly crumple in the rear. They look very bad. Rear impacts are not tested really by IHS or other well known testing groups in the past. Thus manufacturers don't really spend much focus on that (this is changing).

Airbags wont always deploy if the speed/impact is not high enough. Opening an airbag if not needed increases your risk of injury. Also, your airbags are so old, not sure if they even work anymore?

The very worst angle is to receive a side impact. You never want that, ever!

All things considered this was good fortune. I think the outcome may well have been tipped from random chance to safety by your spirits and/ or other magical help, as this seem to be the way it works.

***NEW DEVELOPMENT***
I have basic insurance on the vehicle, no comp/collision. It so happens that despite that fact, I'm getting my vehicle fixed with no out of pocket expenses.
I have one vehicle that I couldnt afford to lose, as it's also my OH's work vehicle. Being able to still drive it was a HUGE relief.
