I've always wondered what do real leprechauns actually look like?
I mean do they bear any resemblance to the stereotypical leprechaun you see in movies/cartoons?

They look like that without the solid colors. Just imagine it was a yellow mist that was see through with that outline.

Yes, they look just like the depictions in Irish folklore and TV, comics, etc.

Girl leprechauns look essentially the same but feminine.

I've seen some, but not all, female Leprechauns have beards, or gratuitous facial hair. They range in size, some are extremely small, some are up to 3-4ft in height. It really depends on the region. Some have more of an ivory-toned skin, some have dark-green skin, and most fall somewhere in the middle. Again, depending totally upon the region they come from.

Dont forget there's some old irish texts, which are some of the earliest accounts of leprechauns that claim they wore Red Coats, instead of green.

Depending on who you ask Red Caps are Fae or Leprechaun... sometimes even considered some other race... but, most categorize them in Fae or Leprechaun.

As far as I know there has never been a report either in Irish folklore or stories about female Leprechauns. Dwarves females, yes and they do have beards, but Leprechauns are solitary and will not marry according to Irish and Scottich legends.

As for one account, they are neither part of the Seelie court nor are they part of the Unseelie court and yes in the past they wore Red jackets always with 7 buttons made of gold and white breaches. It was only during the Victorian era when the Leprechaun acquired it's green vestment but it has been surmized that the green was taken to symbolyze Irish independence. Also, they wore a pointed hat instead of the more stylized one we see now a days; a hat they used to spin around on. Some even carried swords that they used as magic wands.

Likewise, a Claurichaun is not a seperate evil Leprechaun cousin; it is a Leprechaun who has gotten to drunk and therefore causes mishief.

It is said that many females in the seelie court try courting them to intice them to marry, but all they received for their efforts is a single shoe, the reason is a single shoe as opposed to the pair is to symbolize solitude and independence; a reluctnace to become a pair.

I remember my grandfather when he came from Ireland in the 1930 would tell all these stories to his grandchildren and that's where I learned it. He would say that the small town where he lived had a Leprechaun that dressed in red and would get offended and cause mishief if given thanks or if anyone left a pair of shoes by the doorway.
