You are...: a practitioner
Number of Spirits: 7
Spelled Number: 2
Your favorite spirit to work with: Mermaid, Dragons
If I could be anything, I would be...: A Dragon
My super power would be...: Read other's minds
My magical/paranormal name...: Nine-tailed fox

So I'm thinking about bringing new spirit companion home, and her race is from my cultural background. And she was pre-bound spirit, the seller told me that her name is not real (which is obvious, because her name was common english name ;*D .)and coven gave her a name. They didn't get her name.
So if I get to know the spirit, is it possible to find her real name, or rename her? Or I supposed to satisfied with her nickname?
Will you share some advices? THANKS!

I nickname almost all of my companions. It's a sign of closeness from my part. Families, usually does that with their children. I didn't had anyone object only my black dragon did once. He has a long name and I felt shorten it will be better and more friendly too. Then once I heard him saying, " Why do you call me xxxx?" I had to think 🤔 for a moment to feel if he is upset with me about it or not. So I told him why and asked him if it's okay with him to call him like that. He is okay with it now.

So I guess, it's not a big deal, especially if you can find the original name later on.

Yes. As Chavah says, we can agree a name with our spirit that we'll both be happy with.

I find the 'real name' thing an interesting topic. It has come up here before.

I'm pretty sure a fair few of the spirit names that expert, reputable sellers give us are not the spirit's original name and are just a name they want to be known by to their Keeper.

And, if you think about it, why should they even all have a 'real name'?

It also depends on what you mean by a real name. The concept, which you see in the Wizard of Earthsea novels, of a being's secret true name - that encapsulates their energy & power and can be used to control that being - isn't what our spirits are going to give us either. (In my opinion.)

Naming systems for humans vary in confusing ways, eg not everyone has a 'christian' name or even a version of that. I had some job related training on that and still can't get my head around it. So it's also only to be expected that spirits' naming systems can be even more perplexing.

So, yes, I think there are genuine names that spirits have that they share with us (but they may be one of many genuine names they have). Or their full name is too long. Or it isn't in a form of language we can get our head round. Or they have a name for one use, another for another use and yet another for us Keepers.

(We have special names as Forum members but they're still in one sense valid, 'real' names.)

I pretty sure it all varies from one spirit to the next.
