The Dangers of AI, ChatGPT, OpenAI, and Real Spirit Keeping Experience and Authenticity

If you are an artist, that makes sense to disagree.

However, with images, it's impossible to avoid now for us. If any website wants to be in legal compliance you have to license images.

Now, the big 3 marketplaces that provide legally-licensed images are flooded with AI images created by all of their artist accounts. Not just created from AI from scratch, but the artists on their platforms use a lot of AI for editing and changing.

In 2011 I had a quote performed to do all of the images for the website and shop so the artwork could be fully-licensed and streamlined. The quote 15 years ago was more than $100,000 - obviously not only cost-prohibitive but impossible for us.

Our website is so image-intensive, it's impossible to afford every image to be unique to us from an artist, when you are talking about having to generate over 50,000 images because the site, Forum, Encyclopedia, and shop. You'd have to have a team of artists, because 1 artist could never generate all of that art alone. And, it's a unique need because most websites don't need practically all of their imagery provided to them. Most websites are selling items they take a photo of alone, nothing else, just the product photo.

We have to maintain legal compliance with imagery here.

It is absolutely 100% possible for any practitioner to write their own words when writing their listings, their articles, their informational sheets, their conjuration notes, etc. Because your own words don't have to be licensed.

When you take your own pure words and process them through AI they become completely and irrevocably tainted. If practitioners are taking the time to write their own words, then run it through AI, then read and edit it, and then possibly run it through AI again with the feedback, to what end?

That sounds extremely time-intensive and if it's for the sake of a few grammatical or spelling mistakes, then programs like MS Word have had that capability for a long time now.

However, when you view practitioners who admit to using AI to write everything they do, there is a general impression it is for time-saving. It's not time-saving at all to run it through AI if the practitioner is actually editing and reading it over to make sure it's all still correct. That's a lot of work.

When you write your own notes, articles, and information you don't have to read it for accuracy because you're writing it. If you do it in a program that does spell and grammar checking as you are writing, then it does that while you're typing.

A suspect issue with the shops saying they are using AI but don't worry they're reading all of it, every time, to make sure the whole thing is accurate - whether it's a spirit conjuration, entity conjuration, psychic reading, etc. Then, they also say you'll get your information in 24 hours or less for everyone. Either they have very few orders or obviously AI is writing everything and only getting a cursory glance for accuracy (if even that).

Having AI images is understandably annoying and frustrating to graphic artists. However, in terms of the entire Spirit Keeping and magick community, the true issue is at the root of authentic work with your conjurations, spells, rituals, readings, creating sigils, mantras, custom work, etc. Who is doing the work? The practitioner or AI?

And, when you think about the answer to that question, spend 5 minutes browsing Etsy now. See how many shops are on Etsy selling even just Spirit Keeping services. Tell me that doesn't send a chill down your spine as there are SO MANY that are obviously completely AI created. Even down to the fake personal and family photos they post. This Forum was the first and only of Spirit Keeping for years. The community was so small we had running lists of all the sellers/shops on any major platform. Now, there are so many popping up continually that are completely AI-created that it already has, and will continue to, damage the credibility of the entire community.

Where were all these "I've been doing this 10, 15, 20 years" people when this community has been around for 25 years and no one has ever heard of them?

Seriously. Where were they this whole time? Because, you can't say you are involved in Spirit Keeping, true and honest Spirit Keeping, and have never been known by anyone in the community. It's impossible. It all started here, so you can't say you are trained and skilled and part of Spirit Keeping if you were never involved in the community.

As usual, I think you make excellent points here, Magnolia.

In a recent discussion with colleagues (outside of spirit keeping circles) it was pointed out that what we can call AI is integral to so much or everything digital. Even Code writing involves AI assisted programming.

I think when it comes to art, a big thing is copyright infringement. That to me is clearly unethical.

That is an excellent post that really highlights the overarching issue with the entire supernatural community - tragedy is on the brink without due diligence. It's really not limited to the supernatural community by any means as even physicians are using AI software like OpenEvidence to diagnose and treat patients. I originally thought it was a bit premature and dystopian when Demis Hassabis said that general practice doctors would be replaced by AI - that is an enormous step backwards if it does. Because the human experience, the human element, cannot be eradicated entirely.

This is true of any trade. Because, AI is only as good as what it knows and it is not omnipotent, it cannot know everything, any more than a human can know everything, so it cannot be viewed as infallible and perfect. The greater issue with AI is it feeds from information that can be corrupted at any time by personal bias, human error, misinterpretation, etc.

From a Spirit Keeping, Witchcraft, and Paranormal aspect, it's already evident because it pulls from fiction - Hollywood, books, movies, TV shows, etc. It doesn't pull solely from authentic sources for the true core of the craft, very little, because most practitioners will never make the sum of their knowledge publicly available. You train someone that you know has the passion, ability, and fortitude to become a practitioner. Anyone who actually knows what they are doing and are genuine practitioners who care about the craft, immediately recognize the BS in the AI write-ups and information.

It's not just the practitioners who have to care about the craft and care about their work, and care about the legacy, authenticity and preservation of the supernatural, it has to be the entire community.

Otherwise, it's going to be a tragedy of unprecedented proportions. It has taken centuries (and that's not an exaggeration), for the supernatural community to resurface in the 21st century with actual, authentic, real information related to the supernatural. Peeling back layers of religious restriction, rewriting and redefining, and historic assault on the supernatural has required many people for many years to correct these wrongs. And, if we thought religions and religious occupation in history were devastating to the purity of preserving supernatural knowledge, the onset of AI polluting garbage information into what has painstakingly taken years to return to fact will be just a short season of true intellectual awakening in the supernatural community.

It's a bleak prospect indeed that, just as The New Age of Aquarius is making long held secret esoteric knowledge more freely available to the human race than ever before, Truth is already being obscured by meaningless AI drivel - making it harder, not easier, for seekers of ancient esoteric knowledge to find the Truth beneath all that rubbish.

Thank you for sharing that, Hazell. It made for interesting reading, and confirms a lot of what me and a few other esoteric/occult bookworm friends have suspected for a while, that there is an influx of AI-slop in certain genres of books.

I agree with this post. I have been a customer with Creepy Hollows since 2007. Back in 2007 and such, there were so many sellers, I did buy from other sellers. Then I learned a lesson the Hard Way. I had an experience where all the work I had purchased from a certain seller was removed from me or blocked, to be honest, i don't know what happened. It happened around 2018-2019. It was unreal experience.

ANy ways, Now I stick to one Seller. CreepyHollows, this place is more than enough for growth and being a paranormal explorer. This place is reliable, it is safe to the level that you learn and grow on your own terms. They have a strong team. That's my share.
