This situation happened with a companion of mine too.I later learned that he used glamours into making this other appareance, to help me gain confidence and trust with him.

Spirits can definitely change their appearance. I have a few that are able to appear in different forms. Their motives and personalities are the same regardless of whatever form they take though, so I don't mind.
