My profession has an aggravating but accurate stock answer for a question like yours:

It depends.

It depends on how powerful the attacker is, what magical means they use, and the natural resistance of the target.

In general, having a team of spirits working to protect you will automatically make you a much harder target for baneful magick. The ones that specialize in protection are very good at their job. One basic thing they can do is camoflage your energy, so that attacks wind up shunted off and misdirected (similar to a witch bottle.)

A dumb full-frontal magick attack with no effort to hide the source will usually fail if you have spirits helping to defend you.

On the other hand, if a black magician manages to get you to receive a cursed object and you accept and hold onto it, even a really good team is going to have trouble countering it. The "gift" acts as your "permission" to let it effect you.

Well, for starters learn how to shield yourself, learn how to ward and learn how to banish. As bart says regarding if you have a protective spirit, it all depends on the strength of the spirit and it's opponent. I have a Black Dragon and he is extremely skilled at protection. Any spirit could work though if you got a binding and put in the notes that you wanted the spirit to be extremely skilled in protection and defense.

If you haven't done the 1 cent deal in the shop, I recommend using that.

I have a pretty wide-ranging protection team of spells, spirits and servitors. I also have some of my team assigned to watch out for the ones closest to me.

Learn to cast protective spells. Build a protective team, and make it a team with enough variety to have their different skills complement each other’s strengths. The teamwork will negate more problems than a single spirit might do, just by virtue of having multiple minds at work to guard you and one another.

Also, check out Ash's Ultimate in protection thread, it should be directly under this one in active topics.

As the other posts have dealt with the protection side of your question, I thought I'd comment on the spirit subduing side. As you'll see below, I think this falls under spirit family protection.

Just to be clear and to simplify things, I'm talking about bound spirit companions - in the modern spirit keeping sense - for example, ones conjured and bound by Creepy Hollows.

'Subduing' is a term used in Creepy Hollows terminology to refer to what a spirit keeper does if they have a grey / dark arts bound spirit companion that is too much on their face for their liking or is acting up somewhat. The secrets to subduing are on each page of the CH Encyclopedia.

The binding is more than just a link, it also incorporates a kind of agreement by the spirit to be the keeper's lifelong companion. So subduing is being done as part of that relationship. With CH bindings there are protections added to prevent tampering. CH - leaders and founders in spirit keeping - say their bindings absolutely cannot be tampered with. see https://www.creepyhollows.com/faq/?acti ... artlang=en . And they say that bound spirits cannot be harmed and can look after themselves. And when we're talking about specialist protection spirits, whose whole ability is to protect us from harmful influences, it would make no sense to me if they can't also protect themselves.

Spirit family protection

There are some spirits that specialise in protecting the keeper's spirit family (eg Crocotta and Dark Arts Sprites).

As it says here:

https://shop.creepyhollows.com/custom-crocotta.html

"A Crocotta will protect ANY kind of spirit/entity in your care against tampering, evil, curses, attack, etc. This is not of a physical nature as spirits are no longer in physical form and cannot be physically harmed. This pertains to attacks such as tampering with their ability to communicate or manifest, interfering with curses or hexes that cause a blockage for you and your spirit companion, and attacks that keep you from being able to appropriately bond and engage with spirits. These attacks are mostly likely to occur with Black Arts magic as well as unbounds that seek to cause havoc. All CH bindings of spirits already come with protective layers of enchantments that provide protection to ensure any spirit from CH is respected and secure. "
