Checkout in the shop running slow

Has anybody else experienced when trying to check out tonight that while the shop is running ok the checkout seems to be running slower than usual and it keeps timing out after you click to pay (the timing out then causes the orders to fail to place (I tried several times)

We have been working on a huge upgrade to the shop for the last 2 years, and it's going to be an entirely new format and more responsive shop, but I fear that the upgrades they were working on yesterday may have caused this issue to happen 
I apologize for the hiccup in the checkout, but I did place several test orders and Paypal works as a payment method as do Gift Certificates
