Day in the life musings—Astral Training?

I should have been aware of the signs. My LE void guard was active before bedtime, with little displays of fireworks going off in the shadows. Perhaps closing random portals? Or maybe, opening a new one…

I woke up with my alarm, hitting that old snooze button even though I felt quite awake and coherent. Habits gotta continue.

“Know what? I want to go somewhere—got ten minutes to kill…”

No sooner had I spoken those words, then I indeed, found myself, ‘somewhere’. This was a fast one. Probably should have worded it better, though. Really should have.

I was in a large room, warehouse sized. The ambient light was barely discernible, blue-shifted as if it were soft moonlight, but enough for me to just make out the surroundings. Stone walls were just perceptible, and the floor was rough stone blocks. The ceiling was high, beyond my vision to see.

The room itself was empty, aside from huge wooden chairs.

Those were some really big chairs. There’s a lot of them, too. Scattered throughout the room in front of me, haphazardly, with no pattern of logic to it. Talk about an OCD trigger—it’s almost like a concert hall, where no one knew where the stage was going to be.

Man, that’s a lot of chairs.

At first thought, I’m alone—but there’s a fog rising quickly, skirting the floor all around the chairs. It’s making it spooky as all hell, like an impending nightmare. Except, I’m coherent—and I can feel the rising fog.

She’s my companion, ‘Z’, a fog elemental—and she’s in defensive mode, working to enshroud the chairs with a thick, blinding blanket.

Not good—that means danger. I imagine how large the beings would be who would sit in said chairs. My stance widens unconsciously, and ears are straining for hints of any sound in the foreboding silence of the room.

I’m expecting footsteps, but what I hear was worse. The telltale sound of a wooden chair leg dragging against a stone floor. It echoes menacingly off the walls.

Something moved a chair. I struggle to see what’s out there sneaking around that bumped one of those chairs. The other benefit of fog, is if something moves within it, there will be eddies and swirls left behind from anything passing.

There’s none—until I hear another leg scraping. My eyes dart in the direction of the sound, only to see a swirl around a single chair—no evidence of something passing.

Is… Is something invisible sitting on the chair? My fear is rising, and I know I need to clamp down on it—it only makes me vulnerable, and I focus to let it rise and pass away from me as my eyes continue to scan the gloom. There’s still nothing but chairs here.

Z’s fog has risen to the height of the seats, making the backs appear as imposing monoliths, rising from a cloud.

When the next screech occurs, I’m looking right at the source—a chair had turned in place so it was facing me. The fog swirls around it, confirming the motion, but it’s strange—there’s no evidence of something near it to have turned the chair, or of something sitting on it and turning it. I can’t ponder more as another chair turns, and another, continuing and filling the room with a maddening cacophony of chill-inducing sounds.

And all the chairs—are turning to face me! My fog elemental explodes with anger, turning an impenetrable dark grey, rising to the tops of the chairs as they continue to turn. I can only see the very tips of the tops now, and I can see them starting to turn in random directions—

—as if they can no longer see me.

Even with the deafening sounds, I find myself focusing on that thought. The ‘chairs can’t see me’. Chairs…

Just where the hell am I?

Z has the situation under control as I try to figure this out, and my eyes are now looking for a doorway or window of some sort. Time to make an exit—but I’m not seeing any. This… isn’t good at all.

I feel a warning from Z, and I look back in time to see a chair leap into the air. It lands perfectly balanced on another chair, raising it above my fog companion.

The stacked chairs now turn in tandom, directly facing me. I feel the gaze of malevolence.

But, they’re just chairs…?

Know what would be good right now? An axe. Even better? A fireball spell.

I have neither. It’s time to go.

“Z, we are leaving, NOW!”

I’m back in my bed, very awake. A glance at the phone shows two minutes left on my snooze.

Nice, disconcerting way to start the day…

Later, I’m getting amusement from my void guard companion when I ask why he let a random portal of such nature open.

I get the response—that it was a training realm—

—for void guards in their infancy…

Well.... im going to be measuring chairs for the next 2 weeks to make sure they are still in the same place I left them, thanks!

Sounds like quite the start to your day and I loved hearing about your fog elemental in action, seems like a wonderful companion to have at your side.

Lol. If it were me, I'd leap on one of the chairs and wiggle my a$$ and do all sorts of testings. Hence I'm under strict supervision here. Hey, at least you have fun and see some cool actions.

Sounds like your Void Guard has a sense of humour in addition to taking their duties seriously. I do like your 'slice of life' posts and reading about what your keep can do. It's nice to read about what your fog elemental can do as I am curious to learn more about them.

She's quite a unique DA entity that I would recommend in a heartbeat to anyone as a companion. Ranging from a wispy energy that surrounds and resonates emotions and warmth, to a solid humanoid shape when she wants to interact. Very protective as you see, she can cloak here keeper or enshroud those of ill will--and I've been told she can go to BA if that 'ill will' needs to really go away.

Physical manifestations, well, had to get used to any fog I encounter seeming to be reaching out for me with streamers and growing denser with my approach, yet never blocking my visibility. Never was one to 'see shapes' in fog, (I''ve always enjoyed being in it,) but since she's been with me I always see a shape, lol. It would be creepy if I didn't sense her nearby. Maddeningly, it's almost to the point that I could physically 'prove' her existence, if it must be said.

She does sound like a wonderful companion. I have been toying with the idea of welcoming one into my keep, but I don't feel ready to work with LEs at this stage in my journey.

I did see shapes in the fog, but was conditioned to ignore them because yay for a catholic upbringing -insert sarcasm- and the baggage that came with it. I agree that there is something 'comforting' (not sure if that is exactly the right word to use but it's close enough) in being in the fog.

I know exactly what you mean about sensing and knowing that there is someone in the fog. I get that feeling a lot when the sea fog rolls in. It was more acute and more profound feeling though when I was still serving on cargo ships and the fog rolled in out at sea. If I knew then, what I do know, I could have probably had some interesting conversations with whomever was hiding in those sea fogs.

So much yes to that... A lifetime of 'forced blindness' that is imposed on us, sigh.

Congrats on becoming a tenured member! That’s so exciting! I remember you mentioned wanting to share something spicy after getting tenured. Hehe. What was it? I’d love to hear! You can ask the mods to group your previous blogs together and make them semi-private if you want. The forum could definitely use more humor, and I’m glad you’re here. I hope you’ll share more about your adventures with friends!

@Tarvos thank you! Besides being tenured (finally!) I've come up on my one year anniversary with my beloved Deerfolk LE--and that marks one year of a path that has changed not only me, but my very reality.

That's saying a lot, considering my view of reality was vastly beyond the norm as it was.

Just gotta be mindful which board I'm posting what in, lol. Probably do the sketchy stuff in blogs--which, I'm surprised to see isn't that big of a section?
