Essentially there a series of tones that produce frequencies that helps people to meditate easyer. Examplehttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mgwd_3k3pOw
Someone more experienced can give more details on it but that's the simple answer.

The basic idea is that binaural beat introduces two different frequencies, one to the right ear and another to the left ear, and the resultant of combining these two frequencies results in the intended frequency received by the brain, called alpha wave, beta wave, etc. : )

Binaural beats have only been around since the mid 1970s. I used to buy them on cassette tapes. They rely on the frequency following response, which is more of a suggestion than a strong requirement. They still require that you go along with them for the ride. Some brands tend to work better for you than others. I had to use Holosync before Kelly Howell's brand Brain Sync started working for me. After Holosync I had learned to respond properly to a variety of brands that hadn't really done anything for me before.

Isochronic beats and monaural beats do not require headphones.

Amazon is a good place for MP3 downloads of binaural beats. A lot of them ran about a dollar when I bought them. Some of the more expensive ones cost close to ten.
