Haunted Painting?

This is a painting that my mom inherited from my great grandmother. I do not know much of it's history but I think that it might be of a girl from my family because of the resemblance of the little girl to the female children in the family.

I do not that this painting has always scared me and I can not be in the same room with it for long. The longer I look at it the more disturbing it gets.

At first I found it a little creepy, but then I gave it a closer look. The little girl has an expression of sadness and despair, while the doll looks like she's trying to tell us something but the hand over her mouth keeps her silent. I see in it a poignant picture of childhood abuse. :<

Wow Zelda, very insightful. I was also drawn into the sadness of the little girl. The doll being her close companion, knowing all her secrets and sworn to silence.

I agree.

It seems to reflect the abuses of a child and her desire to escape them. She seems unhappy, and is holding her hand over the mouth of the doll, in fear that the doll will reveal something that would get her into trouble.

I agree. People that have seen it in real life say that the dolls eyes watch you and follow you around the room. This painting has always scared me.

There are a couple things that are odd when you look at the doll. The contorted lower arm. The fact that the girl is not holding the doll as if it where a treasured companion. The look of panic in the doll's eyes.

When you are in the room with it the doll's eyes will watch you and follow you around the room. It gives my husband nightmares whenever he sleeps in the room with it.

Notice, also that she seems to be leaning to one side, as if one or more of her ribs hurt. This could be another example of abuse done to her.

It's also very odd that the painter would paint her in this pose. Could this be a self portrait? A painting a woman did to have an outlet for the abuse she endured as a child? If this is the case, perhaps she poured those feelings into the painting, and that is the energy you are reading off of.
