I've been on a green smoothie kick the last few weeks and I must say I'm addicted. And if you have to be addicted to something...it might as well be to something that is actually GOOD for you.

These smoothies can be made with an ordinary blender. I personally have a Waring Pro Blender (the metal base with heavy glass pitcher). If you have a Vitamixer or Blendtec blender....even better.

If you have a cheap-o plastic blender, you will have to do this in stages; plus, your smoothies won't be quite as smooth as everyone else's.

If you have a heavy-duty blender like the Waring Pro, then you'll still need to do it in stages, but you'll get a very smoooooooooooth smoothie.

If you are lucky enough to have a Vitamixer or Blendtec, then you can pretty much dump everything into the blender at once and have a meal within a few short minutes.

................................................

Basically all recipes go something like this::

1-2 bananas (the more the sweeter)
1-2 oranges; peel and remove seeds but keep as much of the white pith as possible
1 cup of water

2 large handfuls of spinach (cleaned and thick/tough stems removed...keep the more tender stems)
3-4 Kale leaves (cleaned and all stems removed)

Add first three ingredients in blender and whir for a minute or so. Add greens, one hand full at a time, blending smoothly before adding the next batch. When everything has been chopped up in blender...blend on high until smooth consistency.

Best if you drink it with a straw. REALLY and surprisingly good and oh so good for you!!

Additional ingredients to basic smoothie mixture: hand full of raw almonds; 1 tbsp of GROUND Flax seeds; 4-6 dried apricots. Just add any of these ingredients to the fruit and water mixture to blend before adding greens.

........................................................
Other fruits........
Apples, mangos, melons, pineapples, frozen fruit is fine and won't make a frozen smoothie, but will make a COLD smoothie, berries are fine too (just be aware that you will have a BROWN smoothie because Red + Green = Brown...still tastes good though)

Other greens..........
Lettuce (not iceberg), collards, chard, ANYTHING

Other special goodness..........
Try avocados (OMG!), Coconut milk (great with pineapple), pitted dates

...................................................

Do you have a child who doesn't eat vegetables??? Try this...
Take your basic smoothie recipe, but add about 3 bananas. You can also add some dates or honey if they are real picky and need it sweeter. Let this chill in the refrigerator a few hours. Serve in a cup like pudding and call it.........

Alien Poop! Kids love it...and so do adults. My husband is addicted.

Let me know how it goes with the kids. I'd love to hear about that.

Another recipe. Not a smoothie, but definitely raw (RAWr). I haven't tried it yet but plan on it the first chance I get.

Carob Banana Avocado Pudding

8 dates, pitted
1 large avocado, pitted
2 large ripe bananas
3 heaping tsp (or more) of carob powder (or cocoa powder if you don't have carob)
drizzle or two of agave syrup

Combine all in a blender and blend until smooth.

................................................................................

Raw Avocado Cacao Mousse

4 ripe avocados
1/3 cup raw coconut nectar (or honey or agave nectar if you don't have this)
1/2 cup raw cacao powder (or cocoa powder if you don't have cacao)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
pinch of salt
fresh fruit and nuts for garnish

In the bowl of a blender or food processor, blend avocado until smooth. Add all other ingredients, blending until mixture is uniform. Chill for about 2 hours in the fridge or half an hour in the freezer. Garnish with fresh fruit or chopped nuts.

For both recipes, using cocoa instead of carob or cacao makes it not strictly raw....but who cares??

I did make the bottom recipe last night - the one without the banana (Raw Avocado Cacao Mousse) and it wasn't that good. I don't really like the taste of banana all THAT much, but think it might be needed here. I'll try adding some to the mixture and see if that helps.

My super power would be...: Ability to fly

I just bought some matcha powder (Japanese green tea), and hope to make a smoothie out of it when I get the time to go buy groceries. I am in love with smoothies. I've always had a problem with the texture of certain foods, but I can do smoothies :)

Thank you so much for these. I love green smoothies and am always looking for new recipes and things to try! Actually green smoothies are the only way right now I can get my son to eat vegetables Lol.

We recently just got a Vitamix blender and it is the most used appliance in the kitchen, it is amazing!
