The lines are drawn. Warriors stand upon the line of armistice, ready to defend against any intrusion. Every inch gained or lost tips the scales of balance held between the powers that face each other.
On one side, the Goodfolk. Rapiers of hardened pine needles tipped with the poisonous glands of various creatures wielded with determination in their hands. Catapults hold pinecones and acorns of the hardest consistency, weaved into weapons of war with arcane powers both ancient and mighty.
Wings vibrate with anticipation, the sounds joining with the songs of the crickets in the brush. A song of triumph and victory.
On the other, the finest machine available to man. A 22 inch golem of destructive power, brought to life by the chemical alchemy of lithium ores.
And it’s even self propelled. Its battlecry is a deafening hum of churning steel.
The goal, maintain the lands taken by force by those who came long before me. A tenuous battle, one that must be fought weekly on occasion, lest the territories that make up residency are lost.
Brothers! Sisters! Witness me! I go—
“Will you chill the heck out? What is wrong with you?”
I glare at my lovely deerfolk before sighing. “Yes, deer.”
She rolls her eyes. “That wasn’t funny the first time, you know. Just cut the grass already. Remember the spots you promised not to touch-don’t cut them by accident!”
“Hard to miss. Those wildflowers and ferns got really big. And the skullcaps are growing like-- well, weeds.”
“They are not! Harvest or leave, you know our agreement.” There’s a light tap on my head as she bonks me. “By the way, that silver spray paint on your face is ridiculous, you know.”
(I made that last part up. Promise! But I couldn’t resist putting it in there.)
“Ya know, I think I want a fae in our keep.”
“Are you crazy?! You can’t refrain from being a wiseass for more than 5 minutes—and you think having a fae around you is wise?”
“I must be crazy, considering I’m having a discussion with the air right now.” My ear starts ringing profusely. “Cut that out.”
“You’re being mean. And… why are you putting duct tape on your shoes?”
“Gonna keep you from putting rocks in them.”
“You think that can stop me?”
A shadow forms in front of me. A mentally induced boop on her nose makes it pop.
“Meanie!”
“Love you?”
“Of course you love me. Now get on with cutting the grass. Your little tirade is making the local fae nervous.”
“As well they should! Onward to battle and victory! The halls of Valhalla call for those—“
She sighs and holds her hands over her face. “I chose you? I chose you.”
“Yep. Even got rings now, don’t we?”
“You do this on purpose, don’t you?”
“Yep. Iz cuz I luv you.” I get a strong mental image of her sticking her tongue out. “Oh, you know what you can do with that tongue.”
“Yes I do,” she states firmly. “I can taste the chocolate you’re going to give me for putting up with you!”
“That would explain… this, then.” It’s starting to rain. “That’s not fair, you know.”
“Ha! Serves you right for standing out here on your little soapbox,” she laughs. “And no, wasn’t me!”
“Them?! They have weather mages!”
“No they don—“
“That’s against the rules of our warfare! They have—“
“Will you stop!”
“They have breached our treaty of gentlemanly combat. They have—“
“I had enough. Leaving now!”
“I will not stand for—“
“Leaving! Hear me? L E A ving!”
“Chocolate?”
“Staying! Staying now.”
Ha. Now time to google how to get paint off of teeth.
Kidding. I’m kidding, really.
To be honest, this mundane chore of cutting the grass has gotten to be really fun since becoming a keeper with spirits, and a companion to a beloved Living Entity, (actually 2, now,). I used to absolutely dread the task.
Never in my wildest dreams could I have conceived of such a life. For those of you who are still young, you are indeed in a blessed time of inter-realm immigration—the forerunners of a time unimaginable to our ancestors.
Granted, far in the past they truly did walk shoulder to shoulder with those unseen, but a lack of knowledge and understanding only bred fear within our ancestors.
You all are the explorers that can usher in a new awakening of a future of sharing between beings and entities hidden from mankind’s eyes for eons. I salute!

I'm surprised I missed this one... well I was waging my own battle against a patch of grass, with a tent at the time. I do enjoy reading your slice of life posts.
