Kappa are also known as Kawako (River Child). They are water spirits, or water imps, who prefer quiet locations, but can live anywhere there is fresh water (lake, stream, etc.) In living form they ranged from on the darker side to malevolent. There were those known to drown children and rape women. However, there were some who decided to help people and bestow blessings upon them.
They are good healers who used the power of the Water Element to provide swift recovery to those they helped. If they befriended someone they would kept their promises and would not dare to go back on their word.
Kappas have a hollow area on the tops of their heads filled with a strange liquid. If this liquid spills out, the Kappa becomes temporarily harmless. They love sumo wrestling and cucumbers; often being able to be bribed with a cucumber for almost anything. They have a turtle shell on their backs, a long beak, are covered with scales, and have webbed hands and feet. They possessed supernatural strength.
