Considered “night watchmen”, Lares protected families and their homes. Lares are benevolent, mysterious, and often manifested as humans or snakes. They lived inside the home of a Roman family when they were venerated, usually appearing near the hearth or chimney. It was considered possible they were the offspring of Mercury and Lara.
The sacred animals of Lares are snakes and dogs. Lares were often petitioned for their protective measures by ancient Roman families, with their ritual feast celebrated on December 23.
Lares are Roman spirits that provide, on a different level, protection and guardianship of a specific location. They intuitively guard whatever home they are in without needing instruction.
